Weiss, Alan, 2001 The Ultimate Consultant, Powerful techniques for the successful practitioner, San Francisco, Jossey-Bass Inc a Wiley Company

An excellent book from a field practitioner who examines the profession from the trenches. He takes a hard look at the tools and techniques that can be employed in order to make you the “Ultimate Consultant”.  The book is a refreshing update on techniques and will be of tremendous value to both new members of the profession and experienced practitioners.

Buono, A F, 2009 Emerging Trends and Issues in Management Consulting Consulting as a Janus-Faced Reality Charlotte NC,  Information Age Publishing

The book examines the emerging trends and techniques in management consulting and provides a very holistic view of the profession.  The experienced practitioner is more likely to enjoy Section 3 of the book on the tools and techniques, whilst an enjoyable read some aspects are a bit motherhood.

Gilchrist, Tim 2007, Crowdsourcing techniques in Management Consulting- Is the future mob rule? .  October 27th, 2009

Examines the use of building a large network of Experts (Crowdsourcing) and gaining expert opinion over a wide and diverse resource base. Aim is more rounded, more balanced and better informed information.  May be argued that it lacks the personal touch of more 1:1 attention of an individual subject matter expert.

Sadler, Phillip, 2001, Management Consultancy, London, Kogan Page

A definitive source of knowledge that covers all aspects of Management Consulting as a profession. A truly comprehensive reference book on tools and techniques of the Consultant. Some 480 pages of in depth coverage that the uninitiated might find somewhat daunting. Not recommended for the uninitiated.

Peters, Chris, 2008, Business and project management consulting, Odessa, October 27th, 2009

A very interesting review looking at the use of Concept Draw Professional, one of the most powerful business modelling software applications supporting consultancy analysis and reporting. It has a contender in Smartdraw 2009 that also has direct MS Office interface capability, nevertheless

Kubr, Milan, 1986, Management Consulting a guide to the Profession, Milan, International Labour Office

This is the  de facto guide to Management Consulting covering the entire spectrum of methods, techniques, governance and body of knowledge.  It does feel a little dated though and suffers from the gap in knowledge acquisition over the last 20 years or so.
