Technology and the Human Community, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 297

Essay

Technology could be defined as tools and/or processes that help solve a problem or further improve an existing solution. There are more human beings on the earth now than have ever been in the history of mankind and yet standards of living have improved over time despite the fixed supply of many natural resources. This has only been made possible due to mankind’s amazing ability to continuously improve the state of technologies. We have become heavily reliant on technologies because they improve our living standards and give us more choices and experiences in life. Dependence upon technology is not a bad thing because greater population means greater challenges despite the fact that a day still consists of 24 hours. The only solution is to be able to do more of something during the same time period and this is why mankind continues to improve the state of technology.

This is not to say that technology has always benefitted mankind. Like any other thing, technology also has the potential to be misused as military weapons demonstrate but the value of anything can only be judged by weighing its benefits against the costs. Technology may threaten old ways of living and some people claim it destroys human relationships but it is natural for us to panic when our beliefs and values are threatened. Change is not a bad thing but, in fact, evolution is necessary for the long term survival of any living species. The heavy reliance on technology is a sign of a bright future for the mankind because it will not only further improve the living conditions of an average person on the earth but will also allow us to be able to survive beyond the borders of the earth and not become extinct like our dinosaur ancestors.
