Standardized Terminology and Nomenclature
According to Bonnie Westra and Judith Warren of the Center for Nursing Informatics at the University of Minnesota, standardized nursing terminology, being words, phrases, and definitions related to medicine, nursing, and the behavioral sciences, is now quite consistent, so much so that nurses with specializations, such as Nurse Leaders in maternity, women, and infant services, utilize it for research purposes in ways that all nurses, regardless of their specialties, can understand and appreciate. The use of standardized nursing terminology as recognized by the American Nurses Association (ANA) is best suited for informatics nurses who tend to be “more knowledgeable than other nurses about nursing terminologies,” due to long-practiced reading habits and their familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs) which exhibit nursing terminologies and nomenclature, being a collection of terms and symbols that are utilized on a daily basis by nurses and other healthcare professionals (2013, p. 1).
From the perspective of an advanced practice nurse that specializes in the maternal care and treatment of women and their infants, standardized nursing terminology and nomenclature, such as found in clinical data repositories or data warehouses, allows for extensive research on a variety of topics and subjects of interest and helps to improve the quality of service and care provided to women and their newborns. In addition as noted by Westra and Warren, standardized nursing terminologies and nomenclature helps nurses to better understand the basic elements of professional nursing care, such as nursing diagnosis, intervention, patient outcomes, and the relationship between intensive care and patient recovery (2013, p. 2). It should be mentioned that nurse leaders like myself often benefit greatly from the simplified (but not dumbed down) terminology and nomenclature found in medical and hospital records in relation to quality care and treatment.
