Testimonies: Spanish Civil War, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 228

Essay

All the testimonies help us understand the economic hardships citizens went through as well as the lack of planning by the local governments during the Spanish Civil War. The narrators seem to have vivid memories of all the accounts which may be due to the psychological scars war must have left upon everyone’s mind. The testimonies also give us slight hints that despite the sufferings of the war, the narrators did retain patriotic feelings. But despite difficult times, it didn’t stop economic exploitation of helpless citizens by the privileged few.

Despite lack of economic means, the families did try their best to remain united and whoever could work did so in order to share the economic burden. Even women who might have been housewives before took on the jobs of earning for the family. All the narrators use first-person style in telling their stories and they often describe the sceneries and events in great details. They also insert personal feelings as if they want the listeners to understand the pain the narrators experienced. Though many narrators seem satisfied with their current lives but they do demonstrate the yearning to visit their original homelands. Another common theme found in all the narrations is the power of perseverance. No matter how difficult times or situations the narrators and their families faced, they didn’t give up and eventually their struggles paid off.
