Qur’anic understanding of Prophets before Muhammad related to the fact that they were illiterate, but became messengers since Allah could communicate with them. For example, Muhammad was quoted to have said, “Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them……”Qur’an 7:157. Precisely, the scripture given to these prophets just like Muhammad was to instruct the people and not be kept for their own use. Through the angel Gabriel, that existed since before Muhammad‘s age Allah spoke to the prophets in olden days to bring relief to human suffering.

Muslims belief regarding prophets; Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus among many others and how do they fit in with the basic Islamic message of One God relate to the theory that this one God selects prophets and send angels to convey messages to them concerning humans. Jesus was not God, but another prophet sent through the ages just as; Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad. Importantly when someone believes in the prophetic word it is just as if he/she believes in God because God uses human prophets reveal desires to people. There is only one God and that God is good to everyone, who is obedient to his voice through the prophets. Also, this one God re quires that he be worshiped only and nothing else.

‘The same religion has He established for you as that which He enjoined on Noah – the which We have sent by inspiration to thee – and that which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses, and Jesus: Namely, that ye should remain steadfast in religion, and make no divisions therein.’ Quran, sura 42 (Ash-Shura), ayah 13

Scriptures given to prophets coming before Muhammad such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus according to the Qur’an were preserved, but after Jesus crucifixion much of it became corrupted by modern ideologies. Therefore, the Qur’an Muslims believe is more accurate in giving accounts of what God wants humans to know and how to live.
