Thanksgiving and Fourth of July, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 487

Essay

The United States has many customs that have been put in place to celebrate the existence of the country. The first is Thanksgiving. It is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. This day is meant to commemorate the landing of the Puritans in America and their ability to co-exist with the Native Americans in a manner that contributed to their survival. Since the holiday occurs in November, it is also a celebration of the harvest and is marked by a large feast in which families and friends come together to enjoy. It also represents a celebration of religious freedom. America is great because it is a melting pot in which everyone is able to celebrate their own religion. This makes America unique and special. When the Puritans left Europe, they did so because they wanted to be able to worship in their own way. Their escape to America was difficult, but when they arrived, their prayers were answered. To mark this event, there are many parades that include floats that highlight American patriotism and culture.Individual American families often enjoy foods from their particular culture. Most eat foods associated with the Fall and the holiday itself, including turkey, cranberries, pumpkins, and more. The feast is symbolic of the country’s bounty.

The second holiday that celebrates America’s existence is the Fourth of July. This day is also known as Independence Day. It marks the day that the American colonists freed themselves from the rule of the British. As a consequence, it also marked the end of the American Revolution. The first Independence Day was celebrated on July 4, 1776. Americans continue to celebrate their independence today by gathering with friends and family members to have cookouts and light fireworks. Extensive firework shows are put on by large companies, such as Macy’s in New York City. These firework spectacles are often available for viewing on television. These companies often spend more than a million dollars on the firework show. The show includes music and at least a 20-minute viewing. The widespread celebration shows the excitement that people felt when they first reached America. However, this excitement continues for those who still live in the country today. While many families have their own customs, American families often throw parties or outings to view fireworks.

There are many holidays that Americans celebrate to show pride for their country. Even though each holiday has a unique purpose, all holidays are meant to bring friends and families together for celebration. These days are meant to remember the effort that American forefathers put in to make America a country. On these days, Americans remember their hard work and are thankful that they have the chance to relax and take a break instead of continuing this fight for themselves. Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July help Americans remember where they came from and what they need to do to continue making sure that their country will exist.
