Case Study

The network analysis and development being performed today is for the AOC (America One Car) Company. In is essential that in any given computer networking setup, the Network design determines the outcome arrangement of end notes in the office premises. In this case scenario, there are 3 different work centers or office sub-sections that need to be networked together to facilitate the integration of information.  These areas are the General Manager’s office area, the salesman area and the showroom area. All these area are to have particular end devices that are interconnected to the network to enable easy communication between the departments. The steps to be taken first involve the following:

Identifying Features of the Current Network

Though, in any given networking scenario where there is a proposal for network installation, a network analyst ought to look into the prior network configuration. This is involves the identification of the feature affiliated to the current network. But, since the networking proposal request the installation of a network on already wired network, the only activity left to carry out would involve the placement of network devices on the current network.   The diagram above displays the current display of devices in the current network design project.

The information provided by the company aid in the implementation of a particular topology that serves the entire company. It is only logical that certain are within the network have more devices then the other. The Mangers office has the essential component, a computer, printer and an IP phone. All the other subsections are also availed the respective devices required by the end users of the network. The Sales department is rationally packed with most computers since most of the working office operation go via this section to numerous end user. This area is also allotted a high bandwidth access to the internet due to big traffic expected.

Identifying and Analyzing the Current Network

The next phase is the identification and analysis of the current network installation setting to enable the actualization of this development process. Therefore, a great deal of facts from the client or customer requesting for network installation. It is vital that the information be frequently provided before and during the development by the client. In some cases the information might be more limited to what has been only provided in the RFP (request for proposal) and RFI (Request for Information) documents, while in other given scenarios the information can be conveyed to the involved network engineer responsible for designing the proposed system.

Network Design on Simulation Platforms

Having the network information is unquestionably critical; since it offers the network developer with in-depth information of any possible issues that might occur after the network gets operational. Thus, the network engineer is tasked with the planning, implementing, and testing the proposed network solution for this business. The components in this network ought to support the LAN implementation for communication between the different environments. The accuracy information provided by the client will determine the configuration of all the devices. The issue revolving around this mainly involves the number of end users and the proposed layers of security and data encryption of essential company information stored on servers. The table below shows the different components used in this network.

Table of Components to be utilized

Component Use
Computer End device on network for access via company system on server via authorized browsing ports.
Laptops End device on network for access via company system on server via authorized browsing ports.
Servers Stores Company information and all the vital data used in performing day to day company transactions.
Ethernet Cables The connection cables used to link different devices within the network, for example, a Computer PC or Laptop to the network switch.
Router Offer a routing platform for routing the data to different office departments within the business premises. It is the configurable port for the network interfaces and sections within the LAN
IP Phone Tis device is used for making voice communication between the different centers using the company network domain instead of going through an ISP (Service Provider)
Printer Networked printers can be used to convey information by printing network data form different sub sections without having to transport the document physically.
Switches The switching devices are meant to offer single collision domains for the end user infrastructure which entail the computer end users within the company network.
Cable Modem This forms the backbone of the company’s access to the internet. The internet subscription is optional to the company. But it is advisable for any business to take a higher bandwidth that is adequate for the daily business operations.

The vital issue to take into account and consideration in selecting the topology, layout and security measures are explained below:

Performance and functionality of the proposed infrastructure

The network performance and functionality ought to be fast and dedicated at all times. Network data transfer and consistency is advantageous to business operations. The utilization of Ethernet cabling offers faster access speeds in any wired network protocol. These connections, speeds can be between 10 megabits per second (Mbps) to 100 Mbps or higher. This is a good bandwidth for this business. This wired network is serviced and designed to be cost efficient data transmission for intermittent traffic between the devices within the local area network. The assignment of internet protocols and subnet masking enable the openness for conduction and identification of system nodes according to their assigned IP addresses.

Network applications in use

The applications to be used by the America One Car Company in the running of their systems will also determine the internet speeds required for access and the processing device required for running this network. The web system, for example, might have heavy scripts that take time to run on the network if the bandwidth is slow. Proposing the star network seems like the advisable choice for a more universal and simplistic type of topology. This network offers a central relay that has one central location which connects the three different departments and synchronized their access to the company information and data server.

Network configuration including addressing, routing, and equipment configuration

Lastly, the designed network has to be configured to aloe access to only authorized system users. Since this is a LAN network with a hard wired backbone the configuration of the routers is vital in assigning IP interfaces to the servers and subsequently to the end node computers. A private IP address will be purchased by the company and subsequently the network sections divided into subnets for IP broadcast assignments. The showroom the other had which allows wireless remote access can be encrypted with strong WAP2 passwords to restrict access to company network.
