The Bank Street Curriculum

To the teaching of a child, there are many approaches. Ever since the development of the modern era, teaching children has been viewed in several different directions. The reason for such diversity in teaching lies in the manner by which each learner grasps and understands lessons in very different manners. Nevertheless, what constitutes new ways of learning are the modern researches that are handled by professionals through time. The amalgamation of both observations and ideas create new methods of teaching that are more effective than in the past ways of instructing young students.

Curriculum Central Elements

The bank street method of teaching is a child-centered education program. Relatively, it treats children as the primary manager of the process. The teachers remain as the proctors of learning, while the students are the ones who direct the process itself. This approach is accounted to make a distinctive impact on how the children are able to create particular adjustments to the learning process based on their behavior and the pace of their learning growth. Designed to directly address the children’s needs, the teachers are motivated to see through the learning process of each child and become more concerned on how they can hone the good aspects of the young individual as a whole. This is the reason why the curriculum involves several active educational opportunities while teaching a subject with attention to several lessons put in one. This allows the teachers to become more focused on how to attend to particular needs of each child while providing them a chance to grasp points of the lessons that best appeal to their sense of learning.

The child is the center of the learning process and not the curriculum. Each child is viewed through this curriculum as a person to be honed according to his own learning process. It could be observed that through this process, employing personally paced learning becomes effective especially on seeing what the child needs individually.

Parents Community Involvement

The parents and the community are expected to support children as they grow. Under the bank street curriculum, the parents are motivated to work further and be involved in the learning process as much as possible. As for the community, enriching knowledge of the society about educating children is a primary aim of the process hence allowing it to be a source of inspiration to learn for young individuals budding to become a large part of their own communities.

Child Assessment Tools

While written tests are assumed to be helpful by the bank street method of teaching, it does not solely depend on such approaches of measuring the learning process of a child. Instead, it hopes to be involved in more personal ways of assessing the child’s learning capacity. Essay-based assessment periods alongside speech defined testing are pursued to be able to see if the students were really able to understand their lessons fully.
