It seems that from the beginning of time, humans have tried the best that they could to develop the possibilities of living forever. Notably, the science of better living have tried the best that they could to make a definite conclusion that could provide a better understanding of how it could be possible to prolong the human life hence making it more satisfying . It seems that a lot of human individuals believe that living forever would be something that would provide them the best kind of satisfaction that they need to have especially when it comes to handling their desire of doing more things in life along with their desire to create more experiences that they would be able to leave as a legacy of their being. Perhaps, most of human individuals today desire to make the best out of their lives but cannot do so due to the fact that they have lesser years of living. Notably, this is the reason why Kurt Vonnegut specifically utilized this theme to be able to create an interesting picture that would likely capture the possibility of having the chance to live forever.
In his story The Big Trip Yonder, Vonnegut utilizes a grandpa who has lived for many years and has tried to experience the supposedly “good” and “best” things in life and found out how specifically unnerving the situation has become. Notably, the life he has lived included a great deal of having to handle complications of living with extended family members. It was as if it is a mediocre representation on how human living would actually be like if people were able to live more years. Notably, in the story, Vonnegut tried to present a more negative possibility on how living forever would seem like. It is more of a definite opposite of the expectations that humans have especially when it comes to thinking about the occurrence of living forever.
Basing on what living for a longer time might look like especially dependent on what is currently happening to the human society, Vonnegut specifically extended all the different possibilities that could occur especially when it comes to establishing a more vivid picture on what needs to be considered when living forever is being thought about. With the current status of living, especially considering issues of poverty and familial responsibilities as well as the increasing number of human population in the society, it could be analyzed that several problems have been extended by the author as an affirmative source of definition of what it would be like to live forever. These problems instead of the possible benefits of living forever has been used by the author to represent the fact that living for several years could only be rewarding in the first few years of life’s extension. However, given the many problems that the society faces at present, it could not be denied that such issues are expected to have a great impact on how one decides to live his life for the many years to still come. The question of whether or not living forever would really be worth it has then been presented through the story.
It seems that the author hopes to point out that living in an urban area within a small apartment like did Gramps Ford [the main character] is already as hard as it seems at present. What more problems could arise if that particular situation has been increased to several years more of one’s existence. True, as the author himself presents, living forever is a dream that is able to provide the desires of human individuals today. However, some of these individuals forget the fact that along with that possibility comes the situation by which the current problems are to be extended towards the coming years which especially involves a definite source of stress to those who would be given the chance to actually live their lives longer than expected. In a sense, the story presents that in line with the human society’s desire to live longer should include a desire to better the current status of living first, as not doing so would render the hope of living forever worthless.
