This essay is based on summarizing the movie and the movie selected for analyzing its technical aspects is ‘The Brotherhood of War’. It is a Korean movie and was released in 2005. This movie is based on Korean War era where two brothers are forced to join the army to fight in the Korean War. The fate of these two brothers is shown in the movie. One of the brother’s name is Jin-Soek Lee who is an educated and a bright young man. His older brother named Jin-Tae Lee is more physically imposing and he represents his family’s future by giving best hope. When both the brothers are called by the army of South Korea to fight the forces of Communist, the elder brother Jin-tae with the commanding offer cuts a deal where he wants an early release if he perform well on the battlefield. Jin-tae soon recognized as a war hero and proves himself to be a soldier who is fearless. But when the war is over, an unhealthy enthusiasm for the battlefield violence is developed in the character of Jin-Tae. Due to this odd behaviors, his younger brother questions him and convince him to act as a member of the family and not as a soldier.  

Analysis of the theme

The theme of the movie is to show how war changes the behavior of the person. It also shows the horrors of war and how it can negatively impact the live of the families.

Technical Elements of the film

The movie was released in DVDs in the year February 15, 2005 and the run time of the movie is 140 minutes. The movie is rated ‘R; because is strong gore and violence of the war sequences. The emotions of the viewer is shaken because of this story which is dramatic and sad. The genre of the movie is drama/documentary.  The title of the movie is ‘Tae Guk Ki’ and it refers to the flag of South Korea and it was designed originally in 1876. This flag was outlawed by the Japanese and was restored in 1948.

Camera Movement/perspectives/angles

There is an amazing camera work and cinematography in this movie as it make the documentary looks realistic. The Cinematographic process is Super 35. The camera movement of the movie has been focused on the two brothers and every detail of the war events and violence is shown clearly in this movie. During various scenes the camera shook too much probably deliberately. The reason is that of being a low budget movie.

Special effects and lightning

The movie has good special effect as we can see in the Hollywood movies with big budget.  This is the reason why the movie is special. It has made the intense emotion of human as an unforgettable experience. The lightning effects shown are similar to that in the war which makes the scenes realistic as possible.

Setting

The setting of the movie is on the war grounds with violence and gore. We can see various bombings, gun fires, blasts etc. The movie is set in the event of Korean War where soldiers shout, we can see combat and fighting of soldiers and violence.

Sound

Dong Jun Lee composed the music and has 25 tracks. The main theme of the movie is covered by a chamber ensemble and a solo piano. The main theme of the movie is ‘haunting’ and is a tragic sound theme which best fits in the situation of war. The sound Mix is of Dolby Digital. There are various sounds in the movie which make the scenes more lively and realistic. These are the sound of bombings, gun fires, blasts, tank movie sound and soldiers shouting etc.
