The Chief Nursing Officer at Durham Regional Hospital, Interview Example

Victoria Orto was first asked to state the top three most challenging things in her work.  First, Victoria responded that it is challenging to make sure that the Durham Regional Hospital has enough financial resources to care for both the patients and the employees.  She also stated that it is difficult to keep in close contact with her entire staff of employees so that she is able to be well informed to make the best decision on their behalf.  Finally, she stated that the last of the top three most challenging things is keeping her team inspired so that they can all stay on their journey of moving from a good to a great organization.

During this interview, Victoria Orto was also asked to provide the top three things that are most rewarding about her work at Durham Regional Hospital and in the medical industry in general.  Her first response was that it is rewarding to be able to provide the very best patient care.  The second most rewarding item in her job is being able to mentor and coach leaders and employees on her team.  Lastly, Ms. Orto responded that it is rewarding having the honor of being a part of a great team.  This series of responses shows how much she truly values her working relationships and the value that her work provides to people and families every single day.

The final component of this interview was to inquire what advice or philosophy that Victoria Orto shares with her team and co-workers about being able to do their jobs well.  Ms. Orto responded that she tells all of the people that she hires or who aspire to be a leader in the nursing field that the most important thing a person needs to do a job well is to have passion for the work that needs to be done. She also stated that passion will help people through even the tough times in a person’s career.
