The Christian Way Forward in a Time of Crisis, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 491

Essay

This article by Rod Dreher explores the response of Christians in Times of Crisis, for instance, the current trending issue associated with L.G.B.T. The author argues that there are several arguments regarding sex and marriage that have caused controversy on homosexuality. For instance, sex and marriage are considered sacred in the Bible. It is also clearly stated that sex should be between a man and a woman who has gotten into a covenant, which is marriage and not any other way. This has been brought to question by those who think or rather feel that they should be allowed to have sex with whoever they want, provided they both have agreed (Dreher 18). He continues arguing that the Bible, a cross-reference for the Christians, clearly explains the bases of sex and marriage as sacred and between a man and woman. But he further argues that the issue of sex has created significant differences between religious groups where some tend to take advantage of others.

The two-sided argument mostly leads to people conflicting with one another, with every party feeling that their take matters and should not be disputed. However, this does not change the take of Christians, and sex should be between a married male and a female (Dreher 15). Condemnation of any measure taken should be done with utmost love even though this seems like compromising. Christians should and must therefore treat these fellow brethren with much love and accommodate them just as Christ loved us all.

Reconciling Evangelical Christianity with our sexual minorities: reframing the biblical discussion.

In this article, Gushee David discusses the understanding of faith by evangelical Christians. He argues that their faith is deeply rooted in a high view of biblical authority as irreconcilable with homosexuality; therefore, they believe homosexuality is wrong. The main point derived by the author is that those devoted to L.G.B.T. in Christianity should choose between their faith, the religious community, and sexuality (Gushee, 141).

Whichever the case, Christians are threatened if they don’t speak out on matters concerning sex. The silence is just as loud, which will make the meaning of sex as sacred be lost in the long run. Though opposition is often understood based on hate, silence is treated as acknowledging what is going on in the society, which places the Christian faith at liberty. The issue of sex has created significant differences between religious groups where some tend to take advantage of others. Whichever the case, it should be noted that opposition is not evidence of the presence of hatred.

However, Gushee’s argument is great but only focuses on the gay people and not generally the L.G.B.T. He argues that religious-based beliefs and lack of complete acceptance of the Gayay lead to continuous hurt to gay people. Gay people continue to face hostility from religion that strongly condemns same-sex activity in the West. Some religious texts condemn same-sex marriage, which develops negative attitudes towards gay people, rendering them a hostile environment in society.
