The Course Guidelines and Syllabus Response, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 504

Essay

Having read the guidelines and syllabus for this class, I have noticed that the material includes some discourse about policy.  I have adapted some questions about what I have read in hopes of narrowing my personal feelings about the guidelines and syllabus. Throughout this writing, I will also interject some general understandings about what I have read. Writing is such a major challenge for so many people that it makes sense that a teacher would want to understand some of the mental barriers people face as they enter a writing course.

What parts of the reading especially interested, confused, distressed, or pleased me?  I must admit that I am a little scared about the actual writing process. For example, I am accustomed to APA style, but we use MLA in this class. Nevertheless, it makes me feel a little better that there is plenty of writing support available.  Like most people, writing is hard for me; especially the writing is expected to be formal.

What more would I like to hear about that was not explained or not explained adequately?  I am interested to learn more about heuristics, and I am a little confused about some of the homework.  I think it might be helpful to describe how peer reviews are supposed to work.  Maybe, some of the less common words could be defined. I think a lot of students are nervous about writing in general, and when you read the course preview material, it can seem pretty scary.  I think it helps a lot when instructors are patient with writers and understanding about grading.  That is one thing that makes me feel a little less scared about it all.  Still, as I read the material I cannot help but feel a little overwhelmed.

Because English is not my first language, it makes things a bit more difficult. Also, I feel the grading policy is fair, and I hope that I can follow the material well enough to excel in this class.  It seems the policies are geared toward protecting the educational imperatives, but they may be stated in a way that is a little more threatening than necessary.  I perceive this class not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity to expand my skills as a writer.  As such, this class promises to be a learning experience for me.

Having read the guidelines and syllabus for this class, I have noticed that the material includes some discourse about policy.  I have adapted some questions about that and other concerns I have about what I read. Some of it is common sense.  I hope my ideas about what I have read will be helpful to the instructor as the class progresses.  Writing is such a major challenge for so many people, it makes sense that a teacher would want to understand some of the mental barriers people face as they enter a writing course. No matter how anxious I feel about what is required from me in this course, I believe I will do quite well.
