Pages: 1

Words: 217

Essay

How does the culture of downtown Kingston seek to both preserve and transcend boundaries and borders? What changes has those cultural expressions circulate outside their “native” geography?

In answering this question references must be made to Jamaican “bosses” (mobsters) who offer protection to certain regions where the government g fails to recognize the value of the population. In these regions the people are neglected because the government refuses to institute measures that would protect their identity. Jamaica can be classified a highly stratified society. The activity of mobsters clarifies how downtown Kingston, Jamaica culture seeks to both preserve and transcend boundaries and borders.

First they respond to the segregation created through cultural differences, especially, Rastapharianism in the society and the colonial culture. They seem to merge these cultures and even though many members of the society do not celebrate a Rasta culture they have been tolerated in the society. To this extent they have become respected as valuable Jamaicans wearing dreads and being vegetarians. Also, this group bridge traditional boundaries because they protect the people who become aligned with those values.  This group has become significant element of change in the post colonial era and among people stuck in colonialism. Importantly, dancehall music was used in to communicating their interpretation of a of modern  day culture in the society.
