The Ebola Virus, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 293

Essay

I have recently come upon the article you have written regarding the safety concerns in the USA with the prevalent outbreak of the Ebola Virus that has been propagating rapidly throughout Africa. Being family member of a person afflicted with the disease I recognize the great struggle the virus poses to the nation, and agree with your call to find a quick solution to the problem. The struggle with finding this quick solution is that the virus has no cure, and is spreading tremendously fast, especially amongst poor regions where health sanitation is minimal. With this in mind I have sought out to develop a plan that will at least contain the disease, but has the potential of eradicating it with the proper amount of time.

Proposal

I propose that through the use of the SIR model of disease spread we model the Ebola Virus Disease and advocate for international intervention, beginning with aid from the United States. Through this model and by varying the infection and transmission coefficients we can demonstrate the importance of healthcare interventions to reduce the spread of the disease among a closed population system. This, in turn would result in the containment of the disease in a short period of time, and possible eradication of the disease as a whole over a longer period of time. Upon completion of this research we will have demonstrated the tremendous impact that a small amount of international intervention could have in the fight against the Ebola Virus and the millions of lives that could potentially be saved. Furthermore, we will also demonstrate through visual models and through the use of differential equations that not contributing to the cause will most likely result in millions of lives lost, and in tremendous economic deficiency worldwide.
