The Effects of the English Revolution of 1640, Essay Example

The English revolution had various effects, these include; the war left England, Ireland, Scotland, along with other nations in Europe with no monarch system. Numerous ideals and idealists became sidelined in the wake of victory. From the year 1649 to 1653 and from 1659 to 1660, England was ruled by the republican government of the Commonwealth of England. Due to internal strife amongst different factions in Parliament, until his death in 1658 Oliver Cromwell ruled over the Protectorate as Lord Protector.

After his death, Richard Cromwell’s son succeeded him as Lord Protector; however, the Army had no confidence in him. Seven months later the Army removed Richard, and re-installed the Rump in May 1659. Yet, they pretended as if nothing had altered ever since 1653 and that it could treat the Army at their own pleasure. However, before long afterwards military force disbanded Rump Parliament. After the second termination of the Rump, in October 1659, the hope of a total descent into anarchy appeared as the Army’s pretence of unison at last broke up into groups.

Immediately, there were proceedings of the restoration of monarchy, the governor of Scotland General George Monck matched south with his army and announced Breda, Charles 11 made the circumstances of his reception of the Crown of England. Even though the monarchy was refurbished, the approval of the parliament was necessary and thus, the civil wars successfully set England and Scotland on track to accept a parliamentary monarchy form of government. This structure would result in the effect that the prospect monarchy of Great Britain, created in 1707 in the Acts of Union, would be able to anticipate the type of often-bloody revolution, representative of European republican revolution. Generally, it resulted in the full eradication of monarchy and finally the parliament chooses the line of royal succession in 1688. Following the restoration, Parliament’s groups became political parties with opposing views and unstable abilities to manipulate the resolutions of their monarchs.
