The four generic “global” strategies discussed include control, competence, collaboration, and cultivation. Control emphasizes certainty, systems, predictability, efficiency, safety and accuracy. Control is essential to the organizational culture because it helps specifically define important goals for employees to achieve. When each employee becomes aware of their individual job goals, it is easier to understand the organizational culture of the company due to an increased understanding of where each job fits in to the larger organizational scheme. In national culture, control defines what behaviors are acceptable and those that are not.

Collaboration emphasizes unity and affiliation, close connections with customers and a people-driven decision making processes. It is essential in the management of organizational culture because interactions between employees help define what the organizational culture really is. In national culture the management of collaboration would be similar, but it would span across a greater number of people and groups. Meanwhile, competence focuses on being the best and having the best quality, or one-of-a-kind products and services. At the organizational level, the competence will focus on one unique aspect of the organizations goal that a group is expected to deliver. At the national level, competence reflects the quality of the whole organization.

Lastly, cultivation concentrates on customer enrichment, meaningfulness and self-actualization, with an emphasis on ideals, beliefs and creative options. At the organizational level, cultivation involves the development of all employees and goals. At the national culture level, this also occurs, but includes a greater number of individuals. Ultimately, it is important to understand these characteristics at both the organizational and national levels because they help determine the company’s ability to succeed and achieve their desired goals.
