This essay is based on the movie happy year (New Jersey 1896) and in this one character of the story will be discussed in detail. This movie was released in the year 1950s but it is still a delightful movie. The background of the movie is that after being expelled from the prestigious private and public schools, the main protagonist of the movie i.e. Stover ‘Dink’ John Humperdinck (Stock well Dean) is given by his father another chance to change himself. Stover goes to the Lawrence distinguished preschool (TCM et al.). There he ostracizes himself from the remaining boys in the dorm. Later, he becomes the target for the tough headmaster of the school (whose role is played by Leo Carroll). After going through all of these problems, Stover finally realizes that in order to get somewhere in life he has to grow up and make himself mature. This movie basically focus on the main protagonist of the story i.e. John Humperdinck Stover and his transformation to a grown up sensible person (TCM et al.).
The basis for this movie was based on the Johnson Owens Novel named ‘The School Stories of Lawrenceville’. The movie is set up in the boy’s prep school of the early 20th century. There the main character of this story, Mr. Dink Stover plays the role of a troublemaker who is habitual in this. He is sent out in this prep school by his father to straighten him out and change him into a better and grown up boy. In the start of his days at this preschool, the boys bullied him but the pugnacious Stover Dink stands firm and tolerate it until the fellow students at this school give him respect. One scene in this movie which is at the end we can see Dink steps on the top of veranda and in the chair he spots the girl and in the stairs he topples down is a fantastic scene. It signifies that nothing is impossible to achieve and everything you want to achieve is possible but you have to do some effort. This movie brings out the comedy and also the human soul together. The scenes of the movie evoke happily the innocence and charm of the classical era (TCM et al.).
John Humperdinck ‘Stover’ Dink (the main character) is a student at the preschool named Lawrence School in 1896, New Jersey. Dink is an incorrigible student as he gave up on his education. He keeps on getting in trouble all the time i.e. saving himself from one situation he then gets into another one. He is also disliked by his classmates who think him as cowardly. However, later in the movie he changes the perception of his classmates by challenging the boys who bullied him into a fight. On returning home in summer vacations, He meets a girl named ‘Dolly Travers’. His hatred for women is increased because she did not accept the prank of the schoolboys. When he goes back to school again in the fall semester, he faces more trouble and it becomes difficult for him to survive. But, with the help of a teacher he is managed to change his philosophy. Dink Stover changes himself by realizing that whatever he has been doing was the main cause of his trouble and was childish (TCM et al.). He has to grow up and accept responsibility and hold himself accountable for his actions. By analyzing the character of Dink Stover we can see that everything is possible to achieve and we can change bad habits if we are persistent and do some efforts.
