The Impact of Communication Methods Between Nurses Shifts, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 294

Essay

An experimental approach to resolve this problem would look different than the one I discussed in assignment 4.3 because it would require selection of an intervention to determine how to redesign nursing practices in a manner that could prevent against medication errors. To do so, it would be valuable to determine the impact of communication methods between nurses discussed used between shifts to convey important messages about a patient. To implement this change, it would be interesting to use cell phone text messaging applications as a way for nurses to quickly contact one another to send important messages. This would allow communications to be documented and easier to refer to during practice.

The same data collection tools would not work because this study change would call for primarily quantitative data to determine the impacts of the intervention on nursing practice. As such, the project would become more concerned with determining the number of medication errors that have been prevented as a consequence of the text messaging system. Furthermore, the amount of time that nurses spend with patients at baseline compared to the amount of time nurses spend with patients following the implementation of the intervention will allow us to understand whether the use of the text messaging system contributes to nursing practice efficiency as well.

Some qualitative understandings could be gathered using this method, doing so would not be necessary to support or reject the hypothesis. Therefore, it appears that quantitative data is necessary for most experimental designs (Leedy & Omrod, 2012). However, since my initial project idea was to measure qualitative data, it is beneficial for me to continue with my initial project idea to generate data that is relevant to my hypothesis.
