Essay

The purpose of this essay is to indicate my view of the world when compared to other students’ especially, the reactions to material printed about people and circumstance portrayed concerning their life. To effectively describe one’s self requires both introspection and comprehensive understanding of the environment in which one was raised. For me, to make this self-evaluation an appreciation of my parents’ contributions to my life’s journey is essential.

For example, my mother was born in Damascus, Syria and father in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.  She moved to Saudi Arabia after later in life being socialized and educated in Riyadh. Ultimately, she graduated from King Saud University. My mother married to my married to my father in spring of 1997 and relocated to the United States in fall of the same year. Mom received her United States Citizenship in 2001. An unusual letter  was written by my mom to my father. She stapled it to her passport from Syria stating, “I do not wish ever to have this returned to me.”  My father said the lady who took the old passport and gave my mother her American passport said, “I have never seen this before, and I have seen a lot of passports turn in after the ceremony.”  She went to work as a contractor for the US government and went into Iraq in 2003 with 1st MEF as one of their translators.  She returned for a second tour with the 358th Civil Affairs Brigade receiving citations and medals for her service.

My parents separated in 2007. Thereafter my mother became responsible for my elementary education while my father assumed his role of guiding me through  high school. While my mother was very acitvely involved in my training and educational aspirations the daily instructions were more from my father. They did collaborate in making decisions regarding my development. They undesstood even though separated that a child needed both parents. The religious culture of my father is from the Christian tradition, Catholic denomination.

This Irish Catholic family was blessed to have all siblings/ children  aunts and uncles were all lawyers. They were commended for being the largest family of lawyers in the US.  One of my father’s uncles served under General (later President) Eisenhower and became the Commander of the AMVETS.  Another uncle was a state Senator and met privately with Pope Pius the XII.  However, In 1997, my father converted to Islam. Therefore, the cultural orientation received growing up between these two dstingfuished people have greatly impacted the values cherished by me today.

They both   encouraged me to make a decision concerning which religious persuasion to pursue later in life, f my desires took me there.  My father emphasized this aspect of my choices, ensuring that nothing negative was communicated concerning any religious culture. His direct words were,  “…religion has never been the problem, the problem is the people who run the religion for their self-interests, greed, or power.”

As such, today based on that solid background my observations have been that the rule of law has become the only way a nation can survive on justice. As me and my family traveled together in Turkey, Italy, Lebanon, and the United Kingdom, my father always taken me to the back streets of these cities we visited. He exposed me to real people and how they function within an alternative culture. Was did not just visit tourists resorts but, villages and other places of interest in the countries, which might escape a tourists interest   He was very proud and thankful for being an America citizen as he often flashed  the American Eagle on the front of his passport.

This luscious cultural background and the profound credible values that were instilled created an individual who appreciates diversity inclusive of people with different cultures directions. Consequently, my dedication to science, international and national affairs is not astounding because this has my family traditions have shaped this yearning. My matured understanding of people and conditions occurring in the world has made eligible for attempting and accomplishing any task put before me.
