The Jacksonville, Florida, Case Study Example

Pages: 3

Words: 718

Case Study

In the case of the Jacksonville, Florida, teen Jordan Davis The 47-year-old Michael Dunn was convicted of three counts of attempted murder because he fired 10 shots at Jordan Davis in a dispute over loud music.

This event shows discrimination because he suspected him as a gangster. The African American community is outraged but ultimately wants to seek peace for the community.  The outrage is based on the fact that Michael Dunn fired shots into a SUV filled with African American teenagers and the perception is that he also got away with the murder of Jordan Davis.  The trial over the death of Davis ended in a hung jury based on the fact that the jury was split over the issue of self-defense.  The major area of contemplation was over the Florida law defining self-defense and use of force.  The law states that a person is justified if he or she reasonably thinks they are in danger.

The perception of racism and the actions taken by Dunn can create a feeling that Dunn attacked the teens out of malcontent of their music, race and personas.  The feeling of helplessness by the African American community of knowing exactly why Dunn killed the young man fuels the fire for action.  The community is protesting and taking action to restore peace but the grief and anger that are present can only be calmed by time.

Michelle Obama has made a positive impact in my life through her messages about eating healthy. She emphasizes the importance of eating more fruits and veggies as well as staying more active to prevent health problems in the future. It impresses me how Michelle Obama encourages young girls to seek out better opportunity in their lives, which is what we need for a strong society.  The ability to utilize her role in government to drive change in the core issues of health and wellness provides a sense of hope that there are leadership figures in the United States that are taking a stance on key issues for the public.  Michelle Obama is working on the core catalysts for a healthy lifestyle that impacts Americans as a whole.

Recently in East Haven, Connecticut, there were two police officers that were tried and found guilty of systematically discriminating against Latinos.  The overall charges included injuring, threatening and intimidating entire Latino communities in East Haven.  Many of the assaults occurred while the Latinos were in custody and in handcuffs.  The local priest started carrying a video camera to tape his parishioners just in the instance he could gather evidence of their maltreatment.  This sparked the investigation on the two officers.  This intrigues due to the fact that the officers were convicted.  It took the local community to document and to endure the abuse for years until the two were convicted.  In order to prove the racist activity the community had to take it upon themselves to seek justice and provide hard evidence to lead to conviction.

Sonia Sotomayor is the first Hispanic to serve in the Supreme Court.  Her ability to progress through the ranks of the court has made an impact in my life.  Her struggles throughout her childhood and professional career have provided the inspirational motivation that any person, regardless of race, religion, creed or sexual orientation, could use to achieve their goals.  She struggle through hardships early in her childhood years which made her stronger throughout her life.  The lessons of value on education, determination and unwavering dedication enabled Sotomayor to achieve her dreams and become the Supreme Court Justice which broke the barrier for all Latinos.  Her hard work and endurance against the odds inspires me to work as legislator in the White House and help drive change within our country.

The African American Health Program is committed to providing options for African Americans so that the disparity in healthcare.  Their primary objective is to increase the length and quality of life of African Americans through education, awareness, health services and support.  This is a grassroots campaign that is in the same vein as Michelle Obama’s healthy lifestyle effort.  This program is focused on the individual actions that will impact the community as a whole.  The African American Health Program focuses primarily on six areas including: HIV/AIDS, diabetes, oral health, cardiovascular disease and specific cancers prevalent in the African American community.
