Essay

Summary of the Main Ideas

The paper focuses upon the main types of educational research projects. Specifically, defining the concept of educational research, identification of the three main types of research and examples of applied research situations. The paper provides five different scenarios of Educational research. The three main types of research methods discussed are that of Pure Research, Applied Research and  Historical Research. Other research methods are discussed but the paper does not offer any definitive conclusions other than providing the reader with an explanation of the research types and their uses.

Reaction to author’s position

The author makes the early point of being able to understand the taxonomy, terminology and vocabulary used by educational researchers.  The author believes that this helps in the clear determination and interpretation of the research.  Whilst this is important, other aspects perhaps have higher importance. For example, the proof or disproof of the research hypothesis, the validity of facts or evidence in the research and the clear lucid, unambiguous style of writing and presenting the research findings.  There is no doubt that clear vocabulary and taxonomies play an important part here. (Marzano, R.J. 2010). So whilst I agree with the authors point I consider it is not the most paramount aspect of educational research but certainly a vital consideration.

Influence of thinking

The author thoroughly explained the depth and breadth of educational research and in particular the layers of complexity involved.  In this regard it put forward a powerful persuasive argument to support his early assertions of the important of mastering the terminology and vocabulary of educational research.
