The National Poverty Center, Essay Example

Essay

It appears that the highest frequency of crime occurs in areas in which families earn the lowest incomes. The wages that many singles and families earn are not enough to reasonably allow them to pay rent and afford necessities. Therefore, it is likely that many of these individuals are driven to crime due to a need to survive. For example, pan-handling on public transportation is technically illegal in New York City, but thousands of individuals desperate for income do so daily. The differential opportunity theory explains that there is socially structured disparity in terms of criminal actions; poorer individuals are more likely to commit crimes. Furthermore, the general strain theory is used to describe criminal attempts that occur when an individual’s hope or dreams are not achieved. However, the relationship between low income and crime goes beyond these definitions. Poorer individuals are more likely to commit crimes not because to wish to achieve their dreams, but simply because they wish to survive.

It is important to emphasize the extent of funds that need to be available for an individual to live even a minimalist lifestyle. In most New York City neighborhoods, for example, apartments are at least $1000 per month, and these apartments tend to be small and located in undesirable neighborhoods. Food bills for one person will cost a minimum of $100 per month, and additional necessities will require at least $20. Since some people make only $900 or less each month, they do not earn enough to meet their basic needs. This is even more problematic for families. Therefore, it is important to consider that for many impoverished people, there is a constant struggle to survive and many are forced into a life of crime to accomplish this need.
