Essay

It appears that psychological disorders are caused by both environmental and genetic factors. As a consequence, environmental factors contribute to the development of genetic factors that can contribute to violent acts like the Colorado shooting. Even though the genetic aspect of mental health is not well-understood, it is apparent that certain individuals are predisposed for violent action while others or not. This example could be demonstrated by the impact that counseling has on many individuals that exhibit violent behaviors. Counseling helps reduce the environmental exposure that mental health patients have, thereby reducing the likelihood that they will commit violent acts. For some individuals, however, their behaviors are primarily caused by genetics and will most likely subside when they are provided with medication to assist the chemical imbalances in their brains.

For most criminals, it is important to focus on rehabilitation. The understanding that individuals could reasonably return to society if they receive the assistance they need is an important one. In Holmes’ case, it is likely that he belongs in a mental institution. He has demonstrated great academic achievements, indicating that this situation may have been a temporary lack of judgment or a symptomatic episode. Even if Holmes was able to decide to conduct the mass shooting, it is apparent that there is an underlying mental condition that should be assessed before his punishment is decided. Therefore, effort should be first placed on his recovery. If he is found to not be remorseful after his therapy had been deemed successful, he should be sent to prison. Occasionally, defense attorneys plea insanity to get a better deal for their clients. However, it is important to consider that this plea is reasonable in many cases.
