PHASE 2 (Expansion)

PHASE 2 (Expansion)

As part of the phase 2, Figure 1.2 demonstrates new deployment of components that may contribute in a network expansion. In phase 2, three servers are deployed and connected via a router in the server room. New work group is created for the newly deployed 24 workstations. Workgroup will ease configuration options, as access list can be configured easily. As per network Dictionary it is defined as “Access list in networking refers to a list kept by routers to control access to or from the router for a number of services. For example, the list can prevent packets with a certain IP address from leaving a particular interface on the router. Restrictions can be applied to the whole group, as compare to select each workstation and applying policies. Likewise, work groups will also provide access management. For instance,

  • Workgroup A is associated with workstations located in Kim’s and Jane’s office.
  • Workgroup B is associated with workstations located in cubes.
  • Access Control List can be set as ‘Workgroup B is not allowed to access file and printing services of Workgroup A’

Moreover, 3 printers were also installed, as they were the part of this phase. The server installation process depends on the functionality and purpose of these servers. For instance, if an application is hosted on the server, there is a requirement of mapping IP address on the application interface. Likewise, configuration of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Domain Name Service, File Transfer service, printing services, File sharing service and printing services are considered.

  • DHCP service allows the systems to automatically receive an IP address whenever someone requests to connect the network.
  • FTP and file sharing service will provide access to certain folders or drives, on order to share data among employees.
  • DNS will resolve IP addresses in to meaningful names.
  • Printing services will allow employees to connect workstation via a printer so that print jobs can be executed.

For customized installations, if an application or a device has a requirement of receiving different responses from DHCP services, there are some specific tools available that allows amendments in the host database with the help of Boot parameters (OIT DHCP and BootP services, n.d). Moreover, physical connectivity will be conducted by connecting the server via RJ 45 connecter on a CAT 5 cable that will be connected to the router. Each server is connected to a router that will be responsible for redirecting request from the inbound network. Router will add value in terms of performance and security that may ultimately contribute to create business value and value delivery. IP address of the existing server be modified, if a new subnet is required. As per the scenario, IP address for all the four servers will change, as they have to communicate with the router via different subnet. A separate subnet will not only provide security but also ensures service delivery and efficiency. For instance, IP address of previously installed server is 192.168.0.2, gateway 192.168.0.1 and subnet is 255.255.255.0. After defining different subnet, new IP address will be 192.168.1.2, gateway 192.168.1.1, subnet mask will remain the same as it is a class C network. Similarly, IP address for server 1 is 192.168.1.3, gateway 192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. IP address for server 2 is 192.168.1.4, gateway 192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. IP address for server 1 is 192.168.1.5, gateway 192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
