The Neuman Systems Model is a distinctive, open systems perspective which delivers a joining focus for approaching a wide collection of global health concerns. Since the Neuman Systems Model is so diverse and universal in nature, it is vulnerable to creative application and interpretation by the many that use it. Even more, the system is extensively implemented throughout the globe as a holistic and multidisciplinary guideline as well as a common leader for quality in the aspects of nursing such as administration, education, practice, and research. Furthermore, the Neuman Systems Model is effective and relevant in its concepts, processes, and theoretical base in complementing upcoming and prospective health care tendencies and concerns.
The Neuman Systems Model is a comprehensive theory in nursing which is centered on the client or patient’s relationship to stress. The nursing system emphasizes reactions to stress, and rebuilding elements that are dynamic and vigorous in nature. The Neuman Systems Model was established by a woman named Betty Neuman who played the professional roles of a community health nurse, professor, as well as a counselor.
The attention of the Neuman Systems Model revolves around energy sources that are adjoined by numerous lines of resistance and conflict, the usual line of defense, and the flexible and elastic line of defense. The lines of resistance and conflict signify the intrinsic elements that enable the patient to fend against stressors, the normal line of defense denotes the client’s state of equilibrium, and the flexible and elastic line of defense portrays the vibrant nature that can change over a distinctively short time period. The energy resources of the Neuman Systems Model include a normal temperature range, genetic structure, response pattern, organ strength or weakness, ego structure, and commonalities of the patient.
Diagnostic taxonomy plays a significant role in the Neuman Systems Model. The clinical tool focusing on the diagnostic taxonomy arranges the taxonomy according to the patient or client system, level of response, patient or client subsystem responding to the stressor, and the type of stressor. The client may be seen as a person, family, group, community or issue, who has a relationship with stress and its overall consequences.
Typically, the Neuman Systems Model is applied to patients with the hope of recovery and getting well. The model applies a great deal of focus on directing a client into wellness. However, there are factors of the model that may be, and should be, emphasized with a client near the end of life.
Most importantly, family members and loved ones of a dying patient may need comfort and help accepting the reality of death in which they are facing. Death and the anticipation of death are highly stressful events. Nursing professionals have the ability to implement the Neuman Systems Model in helping the client diminish the stress of the end of life. Once death is a certainty for a given client, the nursing professional should do everything possible in order to make the even as calm and stress-free as can be expected at such a time.
