The Cancer mapping data is comprised of the number of individuals diagnosed with cancer throughout the New York State. In fact, this data set is part of an approved legislation (Public Health Law §2401-B), which requires the cancer diagnoses to be reported in order to show the number of cancer patients reported is small geographic zones. The documents contained on the site clearly indicate that cancer is a reportable disease in New York State. (The New York State Department of Health) Reporting each case allows the Health Department to provide statistics on Cancer incidence and mortality by State and County. For instance, data is illustrated for the years 2006-2010 in all New York Counties and for the entire state for each reported type of cancer such as malignant tumors, stomach cancer, breast cancer and leukemia. The highest reported cancer type in Queens is reported as malignant tumors at 5229.4 annual cases for men and 5261 cases for women, with a yearly mortality at 1610 and 1692, respectively. The second highest reported cancer incidence is prostate cancer in men at 1601, with 172 deaths per year. Lung cancer in men is the third highest reported cancer incidence at 613 reports per year and 406 deaths. The rates reported in this statistical analysis are age-adjusted to the 2000 United States standard population. (New York State Department of Health, 2013)
Butler, J. (2012). An overview of chronic heart failure management. Nursing Times. 108(14/15):16-20. Retrieved on 2/5/2014 from: http://www.nursingtimes.net/Journals/2012/03/30/p/s/y/PrRev-heartfail-030412.pdf
The paper discusses the prevalence of chronic heart failure, the physiology of the heart, causes of heart failure, and treatment and maintenance options. In addition, the paper focuses on how nurses have an important role in helping patients manage their heart condition. The paper provides background information in regard to regulating function of the heart, such as preload, contractility, afterload, and heart rate. The paper also provides background information on chronic heart failure and discusses the physiologic mechanisms related to heart failure. The article provides a detailed picture of the heart with labeled anatomical features. In addition, the paper provides a table with the causes of chronic heart failure, symptoms and signs of heart failure, and classification and treatments of heart failure.
The article provides an overview of management and thoroughly describes different types of treatment options that are available to patients with chronic heart failure. The paper indicates that there are numerous treatment options such as, Angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARBs), Beta blockers, Aldosterone antagonists, aspirin, anticoagulants, vasodilators, digoxin. In addition, the paper provides alternatives to management and treatment of chronic heart failure, such as lifestyle, education, device therapy, cardiac defribillators, and palliative care. Overall, the purpose of the paper is for nurses and public to extract five key points from the article. The points are indicated as chronic heart failure being a syndrome resulting from a cardiac disorder, the main cause of chronic heart failure as coronary heart disease, the increase in the incidence of heart failure increasing with age, echocardiography as the most standardized diagnostic tool, and the purpose and types of treatments used for patients with chronic heart failure.
Ru-Shang Jiang, MSN, RNa, Shu-Mei Wu, MSN, RNa, Hui-LianChe, MSN, RNb, Mei-Yu Yeh, RN, MSN, EdDa. (2013). Cultural implications of managing chronic illness: Treating elderly Chinese patients with heart failure. Geriatric Nursing . 34:199-203.
The above paper describes the preventative measures and cultural implications associated with heart failure. The article begins with providing an overview of heart failure and further indicates that the normal treatment plans for heart failure consists of non-pharmacological management plans, such as low sodium diets. The purpose of the paper is to provide nurses with a perspective on the importance of considering culture when patients are given a strict dietary plan with their diagnosis. For instance, the paper presents the importance that dietary restrictions can have on people with different cultural backgrounds. The authors refer to food as not only providing nutrients and increasing health wellness, but food as a source for tradition and cultural views. Therefore, the current paper focuses on Chinese patients and the change in eating habits associated with chronic heart failure. The purpose of the study is to investigate the understanding of Chinese cultural views on dietary restrictions and how these patients adjust to a restricted eating habit.
The study was designed to interview patients with heart failure, collect information in regard to dietary restrictions, and analyze the date. The findings from the study resulted in an implication that dietary restrictions was correlated with cultural eating and the understanding of proper nutrition. The study also found that high salty foods were a tradional component of the Chinese culture. In addition, the study found that the high-sodium diet was responsible for the re-admission to the hospital for heart failure patients. From these results, it was further indicated that most of the health care providers were not able to understand the cultural perspective and provide patients with a modification plan to their new diet plan. The overall conclusion to the study has suggested that providers become more aware of other cultures when implementing changes to diets in patients with heart failure.
