In a promotional video for the new Toyota GT86, the viewer is presented with the image of a dystopian world that looks like the action in a video game. The buildings, people, and even automobiles are all bland and dull. The main character discovers a red Gt86 and begins driving it around the city, eventually breaking though the walls and into the surrounding desert, where the car and the driver become “real” (instead of looking like video game characters).

In the essay “Teaching Critical Genre Awareness,” author Amy Dewitt discusses how genres can be “formulaic and constraining,” and notes that “some writing instruction can encourage accommodation and assimilation.” Dewitt encourages the use of rhetorical analysis to understand genres and genre conventions, and noted that genre can be taught for different reasons and purposes. The essay encourages process that help students understand genre and also understand how to “question and follow” conventions of genre.

Big Brother uses technology to monitor everyone and force them to conform and comply to the totalitarian government. It was written a a time when the Soviet Union was gaining power, and it a political cautionary tale about the dangers of allowing governments to take and keep too much power.

In this book Foucault examines the history of criminal justice systems, prisons, and the ways that societies have criminalized different behaviors over the centuries. Foucault warns against the ways that governments are taking more power and control over people and how prison systems continue to grow in size.

In this short story LeGuin subverts the conventional dystopian genre by first presenting a world that looks like a utopia. Every person in the city of Omelas appears happy, and there are no political leaders or other obvious signs of the population being controlled. It is revealed that the happiness of the people in Omelas all depends on the misery of one person. Most residents live with this, but occasionally one will “walk away” from the city, and never return.  The story raises important questions about ethics and morality, while also defying typical genre convention.
