In a promotional video for the new Toyota GT86, the viewer is presented with the image of a dystopian world that looks like the action in a video game. The buildings, people, and even automobiles are all bland and dull. The main character discovers a red Gt86 and begins driving it around the city, eventually breaking though the walls and into the surrounding desert, where the car and the driver become “real” (instead of looking like video game characters).

In this short story LeGuin subverts the conventional dystopian genre by first presenting a world that looks like a utopia. Every person in the city of Omelas appears happy, and there are no political leaders or other obvious signs of the population being controlled. It is revealed that the happiness of the people in Omelas all depends on the misery of one person. Most residents live with this, but occasionally one will “walk away” from the city, and never return.  The story raises important questions about ethics and morality, while also defying typical genre convention.
