First, it is noted that the book can be rated as one of those books that acknowledges mature minds. The novel “sharp object,” revolves around Preaker Camille, who was a reporter for the Chicago magazine. According to the book, the reporter was sent to her hometown known as Missouri, with a distinct purpose of investigating the murder of two teen girls. Due to this mission, she is forced to overcome the wariness of the natives and so, closer she land to cracking the mystery of the degree of darkness in the city, she also explores the Camille’s family dysfunctional dynamics. A part from the whole story, this essay will actually illustrate the commentary about the masculinity in the novel, gender differences and heterosexual relationships.
It is evident that the book talks more about women although to some extent, through some characters, male are brought up in style and hence the arousal of masculinity. According to the novel, Camelles reporting duties makes her get to places like the restaurants. Here, women of almost her mother’s general actual participate in day drinking; she goes further and gets into house of her former classmates, as well as parties. At the parties as told by the novelist, friends to her sister get high, after which they are fucked by older boys. Masculinity is portrayed by the manner to which, young girls get naked and falls victims of older boys. Of course, men will always use their masculinity to lure women into bed, and so since according to Camelle. She witnessed her sisters friends being fucked, that is a clear indication that male were using their masculinity as required. The truth of the matter is that, young women sleeping with older boys, it means that they are considering the muscle package or the physique of the male whom they choose to sleep with. This is a clear point that outlines the function of masculinity in male, as per the novel “sharp objects.” Apart from the above, the novel further asserts that women bodies are conquerable territory and contested. It shows clearly how men, undermine the women body, due to their masculinity nature. In addition, this is another evidence of masculinity that is portrayed in the novel, as Camelle continues to explore and evaluate them tactically.
Further, according to Camelle, it is true that male usually use their power or rather masculinity to make scars on women. In other words, women pass through hard times by being beaten up. This is evidence when the novelist reveals that the female body usually sends out a message of spoils and war. It means women usually face rough time under the arm of men, who are believed to be masculine, and so they use that opportunity to beat up women. In other words, masculinity in most cases, communicates strength, and so women get beatings due to the strength that men has.
The second theme illustrated in this novel is heterosexual relationships. Here, women especially young ones are actually corrupt. Women are free and as witnessed by Camelle, her sister’s friend being fucked up by older boys, it means that the heterosexual behavior is rampant and people are not ashamed of it. Her sister goes further to affirm that if a person wants to do things that send messages of being fucked up, then it is better to allow them. With their innocence, they assert that in doing this, those people gets fucked up too. Although this sounds as if the narrator is a young and very innocent girl, the truth of the matter according to the reporter is that, they value heterosexual and that they don’t see any danger in that. They do not see any problem in that since they openly talk to Camella about how they usually sleep with men, since they are also using the men. Though sounding like horror, the truth of the matter is that women were under the rule of men when it came to sex and over ruling. In this regard, men exercised masculinity on female causing them to have scars or rather mutilated body. To some extent, the death of the pre-teens girls can be associated with heterosexuality. This is because, although not mentioned repeatedly in the whole story, the truth is that they are the ones responsible in the action of killing. Therefore, since the young girls are engaging into heterosexuality with older men, there is a possibility that there are times when they prove to be stubborn to men and so they are killed. On this note, one can actually learn the bad side of heterosexuality that is actually under controlled. It makes sense to conclude that in sharp object, almost a half of the happening, that is the beatings, death as well as uncontrolled sex habits is controlled by men, who believe in heterosexuality.
On the other hand, having talked about the two above, it is also important to talk about gender. The issue of gender has been touched, here in this book though not inequality, however it is evident that both genders have a record in this episode. First, female are seen to be week, and that is why, the novel unfolds that women are always sickly. Here they assert that every woman has sick in her body, that waist for the right time to erupt. Further, their bodies are being mutilated from the beatings, and this is a thing that seems to be normal to the above said society. They are the ones who face death, which is guessed to be a males’ action, and they are taken as a sex object. On the other hand, male gender is seen to be more superior, masculine, and respected. Having said that, it follows that male are seen to be more superior, they can go ahead and beat up the female, leaving scars on them. If that is not enough, your women are killed in the village, a phenomenon that is connected or related to men.
In summary, the whole episode revolves around pervasive victimization of women. Male victimizes women, although they are not repeatedly referred to. The whole novel runs much as a horror novel, although it brings about the common issue that society usually faces today. For instance, masculinity is a thing that is still common even in the current society; heterosexuality is also a pertinent thing that many are still observing and will always keep observing apart from a few. Since, men and women are being married today in the society, and that is heterosexuality. To curb it all, it is understandable to note that as much as the novelist gave out her message in a more horrific perspective, she touched the usual things that are taking part in the world today.
