According to the self-control theory, juveniles that are not under a sufficient amount of parental supervision when they are younger do not learn the impacts of positive and negative behaviors. As a consequence, they have a more challenging time making good decisions as adults. This effect becomes intensified when children are abused or neglected by their parents. It is apparent that inconsistent and ineffective adult supervision contributes to delinquency contributes to the development of negative juvenile behaviors. Inconsistent discipline prevents children from learning behaviors necessary to succeed in society. It has been shown that these individuals are more likely to predict future substance abuse. It has also been shown that subjecting harsh discipline on juveniles is equally as likely to contribute to negative behavior in the future. If all punishment is considered to be negative by parents, for example, children will not be able to learn which behaviors are good and which are bad. Families that come from economic backgrounds are more likely to engage in the negative behaviors discussed. This occurrence is intensified when the families breakup. As a result, their children are more likely to become involved in crime.
