The first topic is selected is “Should regulations for home schools be changed?” I selected this topic because it is necessary to determine whether children that attend home schools are able to receive the same quality of education as public or private school students. A preliminary thesis statement for this topic should be: Home school programs should be subject to the same federal and state regulations as public and private schools. One resource that could be used to support this thesis includes the NYS Board of Education home school regulations (NYSED, 2009). The other reference is entitled Home Schooling: More Pupils, Less Regulation (Rich, 2015).

The second topic selected is “Should minors who commit violent crimes be tried as adults?” I selected this topic because there is often not clearly defined legal terms for children. Therefore, it is necessary to answer this question definitively so that all children brought to court could be treated fairly and equally. A preliminary thesis statement for this topic should be: Children who commit violent crimes should not be tried as adults because they do not have the same cognitive development as adults. One source that supports this idea is an article entitled The Transfer of Juveniles to Criminal Court: Does it Make a Differnece? (Bishop, 1996).

Should unemployment regulations and benefits be changed? A second article that could be used to support this point is The transfer of juveniles to criminal court: Reexamining recidivism over the long term (Winner et al., 1997).

The third topic selected is “Should unemployment regulations and benefits be changed?” I selected this topic because many Americans are not able to support themselves because they cannot find jobs. A preliminary thesis statement for this topic should be: Federal unemployment programs should be expanded to support the growing number of people without jobs. One source that can be used to support this idea is Introduction to Unemployment Insurance (Stone & Chen, 2014). An additional source is Increase Taxes That Finance the Federal Share of the Unemployment Insurance System (Congressional Budget Office, 2013).
