Subsequent to the millennial development objectives, the World Health Organization and the combined monitoring program for the assurance of the provision of clean water and sanitation has documented the progress which has been made toward diminsh8ing the number of individuals who compose population group 7c. This population does not have aval8iable clean drinking water and fundamental water resources which are required for sanitation. As a consequence of the endeavors of the World Health Organization, over two billion individuals have acquired access to clean drinking water. Notwithstanding there is significant work which must be accomplished in this field (WHO/ UNICEF 1).
Over three million people perish each year from the lack of clean water, hygiene and sanitation related attributes. Almost all of the mortalities are incurred in the third world. The inability of accessing clean water resources causes a child mortality rate to be incurred which is equivalent to six jumbo jets colliding with the ground daily (Water 1).
The issue which will be reviewed is the continuation of the mini water oxidation program at the filtration division of applied research technologies. . The question which is given to the vice president of the applied research technologies water department is the mini oxidation program viable or does it need to be halted?
The stakeholders are Cynthia Jackson, Peter Vyas, the CEO David Hall and the members of the research and design team which a is headed by Peter Vyas. Cynthia Jackson has been under pressure to bring the project to its completion and salvage what could be retrieved in the process of closure. Cynthia Jackson is under obligation to make the project succeed or to cease the operation (Bartlett & Beckham 1)
The strengths of the management approach are that they have novel administration and energy. The additional strength of the group is that the organizational culture at ART encourages collaboration between the various departments which are in the ART group. The weakness of the management approach of the team with regards to the mini oxidation system is that they did not continue the research and development and suspended the operation for one year. In addition, the team manager Peter Vyas has requested two million dollars for the development of the product. Peter has suffered two setbacks within a three year period. The opportunity which is faced by the management team is that they have the technology which enables the purification of small quantities of wastewater (Bartlett & Beckham 3).
There is no external electrical power source needed and the dimensions of the device are only twenty six cubic feet. . The device has the capacity of disinfecting two thousand liters of water on a daily basis. . The threats which are faced by the management team at ART with regards to the mini oxidation plant is that there are a number of competitors which are working on similar projects in China and Europe. The original designed possessed flaws and there had not been a defined target market which was established (Bartlett & Beckham 3).
The initial product had been modified toward the application requisites of the United States military and the disaster remediation requisites. The research and development team became disenchanted with the military application of their work. The issue was how to remove the odors from the water while maintaining low electrical energy consumption for the mini oxidation plant.
Vyas is perceived to be an extremely capable administrator. Vyas is able to motivate the members of the research and design unit. The marketing endeavors which were required for the identification of a target market and the subsequent financial projections for the mini oxidation plant had not yet been established (Bartlett & Beckham 4).
Cynthia Jackson, the Vice President in charge of the water department proposed that future products would follow an exhaustive three step process which connected market evaluation, technological evaluation and financial feasibility to the business design aspect. Jackson was aware that the research and design team’s idea had been effective and that more work was required with regards to market research (Bartlett & Beckham 4).
In the third attempt at launching the mini oxidation system, Jackson was very supportive of Vyas. Vyas contacted Janice Wagner who was an acknowledged marketing specialist in order to discover a target market for the mini oxidation plant. Wagner directed her research efforts toward the residential market in the United States. Wagner subsequently discovered a solution in the Southeastern and Western regions of the United States. In these areas, the mini oxidation plant could be applied in order to disinfect the water which is applied for irrigation of home gardens and lawns by homeowners. As the water had not been intended for ingestion as drinking water, the power capacities which had been required for the mini oxidation plant could be decreased (Bartlett & Beckham 6).
Wagner conducted research on the water purification components of the Untied States. Wagner discovered that the national water purification component market produced $9 billion annually. Residential lawn and garden irrigation had also been reviewed. After the research, Jackson reviewed the proposal which had been submitted. After an exhaustive review from Jackson, the research and development team decided to focus upon the residential home market. The research and design team possessed the initial model and discussed the aspect of a $2000 retail price for residential homes. The $2000 component had the capacity of providing water requisites for a 10,000 Ft2 lawn. A more expansive system had been designed for agricultural use which would be based on the amount of acreage coverage needed (Bartlett & Beckham. 7)
Cynthia Jackson reviewed the proposal which had been submitted. After an exhaustive review from Jackson, the research and development team needed to focus upon the residential version of three water purification system. The research and design team moved onward to the subsequent phase. In the second phase of the product development, the research and development team failed to adhere to the initial schedule. Notwithstanding, Vyas was able to motivate the team and additional help had been procured from the HVAC and heath care department at ART. The initial design was enhanced and the cost of manufacturing was decreased (Bartlett & Beckham 8).
The production of the business plan was the most tedious aspect for Vyas and the R & D team. Finally a compromise was reached which would include the data vase from the HVAC department at ART in order to establish a solid residential ma5rket in the United States (Bartlett & Beckham 9).
