The Worst Job Ever, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 557

Essay

When we do something for the first time, we want it to be memorable and a good experience and it also applies to our first job. Unfortunately, my first job turned out to be the worst one I have ever had. I consider myself quite a realistic person and understand jobs are not always fun but it is hard for me to think of any positive experience during my five years at Market Basket.

A significant proportion of customers who visit Market Basket must have had a minimum wage job at some point in their lives. Thus, one expects them to be understanding of the employees yet my experiences were mostly unpleasant. Customers were often rude, would make highly inappropriate and often personal comments, and would even assume I ended up at Market Basket because I am a high-school dropout. So many of my colleagues were students who were simply working to support themselves and their experiences were no different. Customers need to understand employees are human beings first and then workers and at the minimum they want to be treated with respect.

Another negative aspect of my job was undesirable working conditions at times. I would often be assigned to pulling carts in the parking lot during snowfall. I understand someone has to do the job but they would only target younger sales associates even though everyone should share the burden. In addition, there were no pay incentives to work during the harsh weather and even the clothing equipment provided by Market Basket would barely keep me warm. I also didn’t like the fact that I often had to work during public holidays and I had no choice if I wanted to keep my job.

I worker at Market Basket for five years but during this time, my hourly wage barely grew. I was making only a dollar more per hour after five years as compared to my hourly wage during the first year. In addition, there were no performance bonuses to reward hard work which was discouraging to hard working employees like me. The company also provided no other benefits such as health insurance. I understand this is not the standard practice in America but it is a standard practice in many European countries. I find it unfortunate that American companies that make millions and sometimes even billions in profits, do not have the moral courage to justly reward their employees, especially, those in the lowest income brackets.

Sometimes good things come from even the worst experiences and one good thing did come out of this job. This job made me realized unless I go to college, I will have jobs like these for the rest of my life and just imagining this future is enough to scare me. Thus, I am motivated to do well in college so that I have more respectable career and with better pay as well as working conditions. College takes few years but it builds your entire future.

My worst job was at Market Basket and there were several reasons. First of all, the customers treated me badly and often judged me even though I was not alone among my co-workers to deal with unpleasant customers. The pay was also mediocre and so were the employment terms. There was also no incentive to work harder which was discouraging to hard working employees like me.
