A Proposal to Explore the Effect of the Human Construct of Time on Consciousness

Since the beginning of human history the measurement of time has been used as marker of human consciousness, and as such the measurement of time in all its many forms is the most essential and truthful representation that human consciousness exists. The very perception of time indicates an element of consciousness by a given being. However, the perception of time in itself influenced human consciousness. Human consciousness is founded on the chronological perception of the sequence of events in their construct of the world. The human construct of time is affected by the sequence of events through time that is discerned by a cause and effect on the quality of life. One’s life is a summation of the stories that they tell themselves (both consciously and sub-consciously). These stories are defined by a beginning, a middle and an end. In essence, one’s perceptions of life incarnate time.

“The attribute of Dasein’s being is the understanding of being” (Cerbone). Dasein is therefore distinctive ontically in its ontological manner. Dasein is therefore fundamentally and mainly conscious of itself as a being in its own existence and is not merely self-consciousness. Dasein therefore has a characteristic of being in the world and so in its co-original nature to be open to its own being is as a result to become open to other beings, moreover with the very existence of other beings(Lemay and Pitts). But can there be the existence of self outside time? As the perception of time is ubiquitous to all conscious beings, the aspect of temporal consciousness is critical in analyzing the concept time and consciousness. The manner in which conscious being perceive time largely defines character and behavior.
