Essay

What do these economists mean when they sing, “Good for me, good for you, and bad for us?” The song is referring to “free goods” or free resources that are available to everyone for use without any fees, rules, or limitations. The economics of products being made and the market is plentiful of customers that want to buy the goods. The start of this free grazing and free land is beneficial to the farmers and the community. The land is good for everyone to do whatever he or she please with no consequences. The sheep are free to graze without any limitations or consideration of what other resources may need to utilize the grass. The land and the grass can be used 24/7 without any limits of how land is used or how much grass is consumed.  The land is open access with zero cost to the community as the sheep continued to graze freely.  The “good for me” is the benefits of the farmer who has zero cost to graze the sheep. The farmer do does not pay any fees for the sheep on the lands and the farmer can graze the sheep with no limitations. The farmer does not have to pay to house the sheep because the free grazing fields have no limitations. The “Good for me” represents the farmer grazing with zero cost.

The bad for us means the population is not concerned with creating scarcity but more concern about their own personal needs to have that sheep product and open access to the land. The tragedy is when resources are not owned by anyone the problem becomes everyone is allowed to use the land with no limitations. The bad is the sheep will eat all the grass causing the farmer limits on how many sheep can graze. The bad is the sheep will no longer generate wool and the wool makes not any profits. The grass will die out causing the economy to slow down until all the grass and land has been destroyed. The sheep will die out while the grass will no longer feed the eco system and everyone loses. The result will be a Tragedy of the commons.
