There are several types of shoplifting prevention and detection techniques that stores can use in order to prevent this common crime from occurring. In addition to being aware of the suspicious activities enacted by these individuals from the moment they enter the store, it is essential to use technology and observation to keep track of their behaviors throughout their visit. Technology use can prevent shoplifting in many ways (First Security, n.d.). If a potential shoplifter feels that he or she will be caught, it is likely that the crime will not be committed. Relevant technology includes the use of surveillance cameras, a buzzer at the door to inform employees when people are entering and leaving, and the use of an electronic shoplifting deterrence system.

Employee interaction with individuals also prevents the likelihood that they will commit a crime. This includes greeting customers, regularly checking in on them while they are shopping to observe their behaviors and determine if they need help, and placing the cash register near the front of the store (Sebba, 1996). Detecting and reporting suspicious behavior is also valuable; this helps the store be aware of a potential shoplifting and will enable employees to report this behavior immediately to a supervisor so the shoplifter can be apprehended before leaving the store. It is important to train employees to handle this type of need.

Other techniques that could be used to prevent shoplifting include keeping valuables away from the exits, keeping cash registers towards the exits so employees are always available to monitor who is entering and leaving the store, and keeping the store itself and its products neat and orderly so staff could readily determine if an item is missing. Finally, a strict shoplifting policy should be noted and enforced so that criminals are aware of the consequences for shoplifting in the store. For example, detaining the criminal and immediately contacting the authorities would act as a convincing deterrent.
