Thoughts on “Mere Christianity” by C.S. Lewis, Essay Example

The area of “Christian apologetics” is, in my opinion, a bit misleading. It implies, through the use of the term of the use of the term “apologetics,” that those who are discussing Christianity have something to “apologize” for, as if the very act of discussing Christianity is a crime that must be apologized for. I understand the linguistics of the term “apologetics,” in the context of debate tactics, and it does not mean that one is “sorry” for discussing Christianity; it is merely a debate tactic where one takes a position of antagonism in favor of Christianity (or whatever the subject.

As a Christian, I found “Mere Christianity” to be a compelling and elegant polemic on the logic of Christianity, a well-crafted essay on how Christianity makes more sense than atheism. What was most interesting about Lewis’ tome about Christianity was the nearly flawless logic he used to address the questions raised by the occasional lapses in logic raised by questions of theology, and how those discrepancies can sometimes seem at odds with science and the world of nature. Lewis manages to make the discrepancies seem so minor that they almost seem logical, as if there were too few discrepancies; if things were too perfect, it would almost seem phony, as if it were planned that way.

What I enjoyed the most about the book “Mere Christianity” was that C.S. Lewis (like myself) used to be an atheist, and had created an elegant, easily readable book that was incredibly convincing in its arguments. What I like most about the book is how he lays out a step-by-step series of arguments that, if you follow the logic, you can easily see how you could go from being an atheist to a sincere believer. I became a believer through a friend who used many of the same arguments that Lewis uses in “Mere Christianity,” but I have a feeling that the arguments in Lewis’ book might have gone a long way towards convincing me of the merits of Christianity. For believers and non-believers alike, I highly recommend reading C.C. Lewis’ “Mere Christianity.”
