This paper posits to give a timeline in response to the rise in criminality in the United States from 1900-1940. The most predominant crimes and locations where crime was the highest is also another consideration in this paper.

A high number of crimes and criminal activities were documented in the time period 1900 to 1940 in United States. A higher percentage of the most common criminal activities involved serial killings, rape, murder as well as suicide. Violent criminal activities were also documented in some cities (Hickey, 2005).

  • Significantly high cases of violent crimes were evident in New York during 1900 – 1915
  • High rates of murder were recorded in Buffalo between 1910 and 1928
  • Atlanta recorded high number of cases of violence between 1920 and 1930.
  • Cases of segregation among black people sparked the onset of riots in Illinois, Ohio and Springfield in the years 1920 to 1940. White supremacy was the primary motivation force behind the riots by the black communities (Sánchez González, 2011).
  • 1n 1930 to 1935, high cases of suicide were reported in Hoboken.

Cases of serial murder were the most common during this time period. Most people were recorded to have died under circumstances that could hardly be resolved. Most of the documented cases of murders were executed by serial killers. Below is some of the notable cases of crimes related to murder that were reported.

  • In 1900, unknown assailants attacked William Goebel in Frankfort and he was brutally murdered.
  • In 1911, the kidnapping of Elsie Paroube, who was a Czech immigrant reported in Chicago.
  • In 1921, the murder of Chrissie Venn was reported in North Motton (Newton, 2000).
  • In 1924, Janet Smith, who was a Scottish nursemaid, was murdered in Canada, gun shots were observed in her body, although implications of suicide were documented.
