History of Crimea
- Founding civilizations
- Crimea was founded by the Greeks in the 6th century B.C. Called “Tauris,” it came under frequent attack from the Scythians and Sarmatians. In the 1st century A.D., the Romans built fortresses at coastal locations but were driven out in the 4th century by the Goths. Christianity came to the peninsula in 988.
- “Qirim”
- The Golden Horde conquered the peninsula in the 13th century, renaming it “Qirim,” from which comes the name Crimea. The Tatars prospered here, having concluded a trade agreement between Genoa and Venice.
- Industrial Age to Modern Era
- Crimea was taken over by Russia in 1783, giving Russia two main entries to the Black Sea coastline: Georgia and Crimea. The British and French attacked in 1854, fearing Russia would control a vital passageway for sea trade. Russian won the Crimean War in 1856. Germany took control in World War I, with the Russian Army reconquering the peninsula late in the war. In 1921, Crimea became the Republic of Crimean Tatars. The Germans and Russians fought over Crimea in World War II, which, in part, ended at the Yalta conference. In 1954, Crimea became part of Ukraine.
Demographic, administrative, geographic and climatological information
- Demographics
- Crimea has a total of 10,038 square miles. The estimated population is approximately 1,973,185. The official language is Ukrainian. However, since most of the population is ethnic Russian, people speak mostly in Russian.

Crimean peninsula is located between the Black Sea on the north coast and Azov Sea on the west coast
- Climatological
- There are three types of climates in Crimea: steppe, continental (covering the majority of the peninsula), and sub-Mediterranean on the south coast. Mountains play an important role in Crimean weather. The temperature of the sea during the summer is about 71-78 F. There is no humidity, and sea breezes keep high temperatures down, making it a very comfortable environment.
