Transformational Leadership in Nursing, Essay Example

Transformational leadership supports the ability to participate in a task-oriented environment that will promote a greater emphasis on change as it impacts the nursing profession (Hutchinson & Jackson, 2013). Nurse leaders must be able to transform the profession and recognize how specific tasks promote the ability to change or shift the practice environment towards a more productive strategy (Hutchinson & Jackson, 2013). This process influences how nurse leaders view their units and the organization as a whole, using a specific vision, a set of norms, and a set of core values that will positively impact the profession and its employees at a higher level (Hutchinson & Jackson, 2013). This process engages nurses in their ability to prevent chaos and to recognize that an organized approach to the profession will have a lasting impact on many areas, including professional growth, level of experience, and patient outcomes that will transform the organization and its ability to provide high quality care and treatment at a continuous level.

From a specialist perspective, the labor and delivery unit represents a number of challenging perspectives that have a direct impact on patient care. Therefore, the ability to transform the unit through nursing core competencies is of critical importance (Lacasse, 2013). In this context, nurses must demonstrate high level skills in many areas related to labor and delivery, including but not limited to prenatal care, postpartum needs, and newborn care. These factors require nurses to achieve effective change in many areas and to be proactive in their efforts to minimize chaos and white noise within the profession as much as possible. This will facilitate improved engagement and motivation to perform at the expected level to meet the needs of this specialty population. This focus must be timely in nature in order to have a desirable impact on the population that is served and their specific needs to improve quality of life.
