Type 2 Diabetes is affects millions, it is the most common form of diabetes. It is a lifelong disease in which there are high levels of sugar or glucose in the blood. Your body doesn’t properly make or control how insulin is used in the body. There are several living with the disease who are not aware they are affected or at risks. What many see as the faces of Type 2 Diabetes are most minorities including African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and other Islanders. However none takes on the identity or cultural stigma than African Americans. The cultural aspects that surround Type 2 Diabetes plays to the lifestyles, lack of health resources, and the demographics of many minorities that are affected. Unfortunately African Americans are disproportionately affected by Type 2 Diabetes, such that Latinos are overwhelmingly affected as well.

The course of this disease will continue to rise for these minorities because of their socioeconomic status and the cultural implications as the way they affect the minority groups at much faster rate than non-minorities. The three principles of age-related disease development for Type 2 Diabetes is that it is a normal part of aging it is a chronic disease that interferes with activities of daily living. The second principle is instrumental ADL problems in Type 2 diabetes are that it can affect the hearing, eyesight, and there is a risk of loss of limbs. Every day it poses new challenges of eating, walking, or lying down. Type 2 Diabetes does place a limitation on the lifespan of individuals, with all the complications that could lead to kidney failure, high blood pressure, or heart disease, it could be a possibility of the aging process to not reach the potential lifespan.

A way that this disease could be prevented from taking this course of direction and improving the quality of life by putting out more awareness to the disease in minorities communities. Developing more programs at local health clinics and schools to test for those at risks and encourage people to check on their health, and importantly promoting a healthy lifestyle in every culture.
