Understanding of School Law, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 338

Essay

In the United States, various federal, state and local laws help govern and define the ways in which school districts must provide a quality education for the youth of this country.  As ELCC 5 and 6 standards demand that school leaders have a thorough understanding of school law, this is not always the case.  For this reason, these standards have been created and implemented in order to avoid the inaccuracies and errors associated with school leadership decisions across the country.  From a personal perspective, I do not feel that I currently have a strong knowledge of the state and federal laws that are necessary for maintaining a school district that adheres to the current legal requirements.  There are, however, many different sources of information and knowledge that can be utilized in order to achieve a knowledgeable status for understanding and implementing policies that adhere to these legal standards and restrictions on an ongoing basis.

As a leader in the school district, it is critical to understand which individuals within the school system are most knowledgeable.  Of course the highest ranking officials in a school district should be most knowledgeable of legal concerns and considerations for all school district decisions.  If these individuals are available for counsel, this would be the easiest source of obtaining information on these legal standards and requirements.  However, the school board and any other governing body would also be required to have the same legal knowledge as individual leaders within the district.  Nevertheless, these sources can be utilized for more formal informational gatherings while personal inquiries can always be found by researching at Law Libraries or acquiring legal documentation directly from the state or local legislative bodies.  All laws are made available to the general public.  This is probably the best resource for me to obtain the type of information necessary to adhere to ELCC 5 and 6 standards to understand the legal requirements and demands while also being placed in a knowledgeable position to implement policies and procedures that adhere to them as well.
