In this journal article concerning a review of positive uses of indwelling urethral catheters and the benefits for those suffering from urinary infections. The author puts emphasis of preventing urinary infections in clinics and hospitals by medical providers. The author analyzes current literature concerning urethral catheters and other strategies that can help decrease the amount time of catheter placement. The methods used by the author for researching the urethral catheter subject matter was key words search that produced 53 abstracts on the subject. In addition, the journal article is based on 9 research studies that focused on reducing the duration of indwelling catheter use.

The author found that the medial industry overall tends to leave the catheter for long periods of time instead of finding more solutions that help patients have positive live experiences with catheters. In addition, the author found that the elder patients over 65 were subjected to unnecessary indwelling urethral catheters or spend a lifetime using catheters.  It was found the inclusion of nurses in the catheter process led to patients leaving the hospitals without keeping the catheter permanently. The urethral catheters are ordered by the physicians while the patient is in the hospital. The normal routine keeps the patient with the urethral catheter until they are discharge.  The authors research found that when the nurse practitioners was involved with the discharge orders, the patient use of indwelling urethral catheters were decreased by half. The results found that many strategies had been used to decreased indwelling urethral catheters however, the nurse-led intervention produced the best results for patients.
