Annotated Bibliography

Allison, Robert. The Boston Tea Party. Carlisle, Massachusetts: Commonwealth Editions, 2007.

Allison’s work highlights the history leading up to the Boston Tea Party. Mainly, this book will be used in the research to provide context as to why colonists felt taxation without representation was worthy enough to incite rebellion.

Carp, Benjamin. Defiance of the Patriots: the Boston Tea Party and the Making of America. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2010.

Carp’s book researches specific events during the Boston Tea Party. His work will be used to elaborate on the events of the evening, the rabble-rousers, as well as the plotting and planning involved. As Carp gives specifics as to the tonnage dumped (tea) and the political temperature of the crowd (not only the inciters but also the town as representation of the country), his work will be used as the majority of references points.

Fradin, Dennis. Turning Points in U.S. History: The Boston Tea Party. Tarrytown, NY: Marshall Cavendish Benchmark, 2008.

Fradin’s work speaks more about the tea debt that England acquired after the French wars. This gives background to the politics of the Boston Tea Party from a monetary point of reference as well as from the state of affairs that England found herself in during this time period.

Hewes, George. Boston Tea Party. The History Place, last modified 2014, accessed July 15, 2014, http://www.historyplace.com/unitedstates/revolution/teaparty.htm

Hewes’ eyewitness account of the Boston Tea Party (written as a journal entry) will give first hand account to the event. Through Hewes’ own work the paper will add detail to the Boston Tea Party (something none of the other works accomplish) and this detail will help in determining the mindset of the crowd that evening (how much of the event was truly political and how much was sanctioned as mere rabble-rousing). Hewes speaks for the crowd of patriots during his journal entry and this first-hand account offers a true taste of the Boston Tea Party: the author includes how the citizenry reacted to the tea being thrown off board, and how the patriots banded together through the beginning stages of the revolution. Such information will be a boon to include in this research paper as it provides authenticity to the work and a more visceral feel.

Mohanty, Mrutyunjaya. The Coercive Acts and the American Revolution: From Supplication and Appeal to Resistance and Discovery. Research Scholar, last Modified 2013, accessed July 15, 2014, http://www.researchscholar.co.in/downloads/1-mohanty.pdf

Mohanty’s work focuses not only on the American side of the Boston Tea Party but the British reaction to the event (something that’s lacking the aforementioned references). The work will be included in the research paper because it allows a more focused and all-encompassing view of the events from both sides affected by it. This will add an interesting dynamic to the paper as conflict is bound to abound between these two parties, and the work serves as a gateway to the Revolutionary War (again, the other works don’t focus on this aspect of the Boston Tea Party, but rather, on the events itself).
