Vision Statement, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 491

Essay

In 5 years time I will be 28 years of age.  My vision for the future is based upon a number of different considerations.  On the education front I would have hoped to have completed both undergraduate and postgraduate degree studies; having achieved a Bachelors and Masters degree.  If my academic studies have progressed satisfactorily and depending upon the nature of my job at that time I may pursue Doctoral studies by a suitable research program. It is likely that I will be married and may have at least one child and as such I would be looking towards suitable work/life balance with the ability to enjoy recreation time with my family.  I would equally like the opportunity to travel with my work and spend a portion of my time in international travel.

Perhaps the most significant gap in my vision relates to that of enough work experience. In these recessionary times it is uncertain whether I will retain my job and build enough work experience. Given the uncertainty around the job market it might become appropriate to consider self-employment and establishing a small business.  It is this situation that might change my future career direction. I also wish to pursue professional qualifications and recognise that this may take in excess of 5 years to fully complete all of the professional membership requirements.

Since 2007 I have been a Petty Officer in the US Navy, essentially middle line Manager, I hope to be in a position to build upon this position of leadership and as such ultimately find a position in a people centred organization where I can maximize customer services and leadership skills acquired in the Navy. I am currently developing academic skills and qualification with Ashford University in the field of organizational management.  I look forwards to launching from this platform into improved career perspectives

Gap Analysis

  • No degree obtained from Inter American University, Criminal Justice Undergraduate degree program
  • Civilian Education degree and professional qualifications are currently missing placing me at a disadvantage in the open competition market when coming out of the US Navy
  • My current experience is limited to the US Armed forces and whilst this level of training is highly regarded it might not readily identify with the type of Organization leadership role I will be seeking in civilian life. As such I am taking corrective action by undertaking undergraduate studies leading towards a degree from Ashford University
  • The core values and training that I have received whilst working as an Officer in the US Navy will place me in a good position to obtain further experience in civilian life. In particular demonstrating core skills in the areas of:-
    • Excellent communicator both verbally and in writing
    • Highly analytical thinker and good decision making skills
    • Highly computer literate over a wide variety of applications
    • Flexible team player with good group dynamics skills
    • Ability to prioritize workloads in difficult and demanding environments
    • Outstanding leadership skills motivating high levels of performance
    • Good problem solving skills and proven relationship builder with unsurpassed interpersonal skills
