The Effectiveness of Leadership and Management, Research Proposal Example

Pages: 2

Words: 635

Research Proposal

This proposed project deals with determining how theoretical effectiveness in leadership and management is practically important in actual workplace settings. The rationale for this project is as follows. There are various theories on effective leadership and management available in literature. Some of these theories are discussed in the works of various authors, such as in Miles (2007), which inferred upon different leadership values related to innovation, and in Idowu (2009), which discussed about the effectiveness of leadership in corporate management and turnaround. There are also other studies such as Botha and Claassens (2010) which more directly considered the importance of leadership and management principles learned from higher education settings in workplace practice. A similar article by Nienaber (2010) focused on research-based qualities of effective leadership and management. Given all of these theories on the qualities that make a good leader and manager, this proposal formulates the question of which of these qualities drawn from studies and scholarly contemplations can be considered to have real practical relevance based on evidences drawn from different companies. That is, it is proposed by this paper that a project be conducted to verify the practicality and applicability of effective leadership and management traits developed from academic research.

As such, the methodology that this project proposal selects is composed of two major stages, wherein the second major stage is further broken into several sub-stages. The first stage of the methodology is an extensive review of literature in order to draw out what are the currently recognized qualities of effective leadership and management. In carrying out this stage, it is intended for this project to review all studies that have been published on the subject of leadership and management effectiveness in the last five years, and compile the findings of these studies in the construction of a matrix that consolidates the common qualities of effective leadership and management recognized by these studies. This matrix will serve as the basis for the development of a survey instrument that will be used for the second stage of the project. In this second stage, this project intends to contact different business institutions, through such institution’s official emails and contact numbers, in order to ask them to participate in the research by accomplishing the developed survey instrument. The instrument will determine to what extent each of the business institutions hold each of the values of effective leaderhsi8p and management identified in the previous stage as actually important. Through the survey, it will be shown which among the different qualities that were compiled during the first stage of the study are actually important to business establishments at the present. Analysis of the data will be done both descriptively and inferentially using appropriate quantitative and statistical tools. Descriptively, it will be determined how many firms see each of the qualities of effective leadership and management as important. Pie charts can be constructed to show the extent to which each quality is considered important by the sample of business establishments. Inferential analysis can be conducted by determining if there are some qualities that are deemed to be more important by the sample than others. Appropriate statistics software such as SPSS can be used in conducting all of the statistical analyses required for the project.

A viable project proposal that is relevant to the study of management has been presented in this paper. This project proposal awaits approval and is ready for execution.
