It is important for nurses to fully understand their scope of practice according to the regulations put forth by the American Nurses Association and the Ohio Board of Nursing. As professionals, we need to constantly understand the information that they release because it guides or professional practice. As such, the ANA focuses on developing effective practice with the OBN focuses of the legal aspect of practice (OBN, n.d.). The example about Thorazine medication highlights an important point. It highlights the importance of the nursing process in detecting side effects as they pertain to medication use. While the ANA would help a nurse understand how to walk through the diagnostic and reporting process, the OBN is responsible for ensuring that these procedures are carried out in a format recommended by the state. By understanding both ANA and OBN regulations, a nurse could be certain that they are acting according to local and national regulations (ANA, n.d.). In doing so, they are positively contributing to the care of their patient in addition to the overall development of the nursing field. Thus, it is important for all nurses to remain updated on the latest news from both organizations.
