Annotated Bibliography

Bass, B. G. (2009). Faith Based Programs and Their Influence on Homelessness. Family & community health32(4), 314-319.

The author reviews the main causes of homelessness in the United States and the government-funded programs that are designed to tackle the problem. The two initiatives are identified as “continuum of care” and “housing first”. According to the author’s research, community services play an important role in the life of homeless people in three ways: they provide alcohol and drug recovery service, mental health service, and housing based on individual circumstances. At the same time, the author implies that faith-based organizations are crucial for successfully tackling homelessness.

Sargeant, A., & Shang, J. (2011). Growing Philanthropy in the United States. A Report on the Growing Philanthropy Summit. Washington, DC.

The report created for the Washington, D.C. Growing Philanthropy Summit identified some of the development areas within the United States that could improve the life of those who are homeless. Some of the recommendations could be put in practice by implementing welfare and social care reforms. The authors state that charitable organizations should focus on providing longer term solutions and making fund-raising more effective, more professional, while increasing volunteer – recipient relationships.

Shinn, M. (2010). Homelessness, poverty, and social exclusion in the United States and Europe. European Journal of Homelessness4, 19-44.

In this article, the author identifies the two main causes of lifetime homelessness: social exclusion and poverty. The impact of social exclusion is examined in detail, and the researcher finds that those who are unable to fit in the society are less likely to gain access to health care, wealth, jobs, and welfare. Poverty and social and economic inequality are found to be the main reason for the above highlighted exclusion and lack of support.

Toro, P. A., Dworsky, A., & Fowler, P. J. (2007, March). Homeless youth in the United States: Recent research findings and intervention approaches. In National symposium on homelessness research.

Based on the research carried out by the authors, adolescents and young adults are the age group most at risk of becoming homeless. Reviewing related government initiatives, such as The Runaway and Homeless Youth Act, the authors focus on two groups of homeless youth: single males and young single mothers. Social welfare and charities should focus on not only supporting the above groups, but also preventing homelessness among them.
