Incognito: I have chosen incognito because anonymous is quite a common word in everyday vocabulary but it doesn’t always accurately describe a person or an event. In some cases, individuals may not be unknown but simply known by a false identity in which case incognito is more appropriate to describe them.
Titanic: I had never heard of this word before I came to know about James Cameron’s Oscar-winning movie. I would like this word to be used more often because it represents enormous objects or events better than ‘huge’ which is often confused with simply ‘big’ by an average person.
Microcosms: This is another word which is known to very few people in my opinion. I like this word because sentences using this word are usually short and yet clearly convey the message of the speaker. In my opinion, microcosm could be thought of as a brief analogy.
Malevolence: When we sometimes use the word ‘envy’ in everyday language, we simply express our desire to have something someone else has but we do not wish ill will towards the other person. Malevolence on the other hand involves ill will towards others, thus, should be used instead of ‘envy’ when the subject in question may have negative feelings towards someone.
Perish: I have chosen this word because while its alternative ‘disappear’ is open to interpretations, perish usually always means permanent disappearance. When we say ‘disappear’ it may mean either temporary or permanent disappearance.
Suffice: I have chosen suffice because it is a better alternative to ‘sufficient’ in many cases and also helps keep the sentences shorter. To me, suffice means ‘just about right’.
Pensive: I have seen this word often in works of fiction but do not usually counter in everyday language. It denotes thoughtfulness with a dose of melancholy and could be used to describe almost all of us at some stage in our lives.
Moribund: I like this word because it is a better alternative to relatively more sensitive alternative ‘dying’ or ‘dead’. Moribund is especially useful to use in the company of children or in situations involving formal communication.
Schism: I have chosen this word because I expect its use to grow over time. I feel that the number of people who are discontent with their faiths has been rising over time and new groups may form within existing religions that have little or no regard for traditional religious teachings and/or institutions.
Insidious: This is another word I have encountered often in works of fiction, especially spy thrillers. I used to think ‘treacherous’ is the most extreme word to describe deception but insidious is even a step ahead. I expect this word to be used more in political journalism as the balance of power shifts from the U.S. to other countries.
